INDUCTION SPEECH OF MADAME ETWEDA A. COOPER MAYOR OF EDINA 2009
Friends, Countrymen, Citizens of Edina and Grand Bassa County,
Edina says Muehn oh! Edina says Welcome!
Edina is 178 years old this year. When I look around me I see today what its founders saw 177 years ago, a tranquility and bountifulness that call to you. An atmosphere that invigorates you, soothes your mind and soul, allowing you to think and most importantly hear yourself think, a quality that is often lacking in today's fast paced world. Much history occurred in this quiet, secluded piece of paradise, much of it lost, but still it stands a monument to a dream held by a diverse group of people.
A dream about leaving a tragic past behind and moving towards a better future; a dream that stands testament to how with little, much can be accomplished; a dream that speaks unity, togetherness, hard work and resourcefulness. A dream represented not only by the monument to King Bob Gray, but also by the harmony in which Edina has always thrived.
Edina was founded in 1832, yet aside a few monuments and ruins of houses we see nothing. Yes the war has destroyed much of what was here; yes the hard economic times have made rebuilding a difficult thing to do, however the greatest destruction was conducted by the citizens of Edina herself. A destruction not of physical infrastructure, not of homes, and things, but of the mind; we the current citizens of Edina have failed to dream, envision and plan a better Edina. That is our failure. We have failed to emulate the founders of Edina. They had a dream and accomplished it, on no matter how small a scale, they accomplished their dream. For too long we have not engaged each other and partners, from the Government of Liberia to local and International Partners. That time is at an end.

was later given to the United Colonization Societies of New York and Pennsylvania and became part of the Bassa Cove Colony in 1837. On October 22, 1836, a school was opened and in December 1837, a church was founded in the colony. A second church opened in late 1839 while the Baptists started a mission at Edina. Edina is listed as one of the original settlements comprising the Commonwealth of Liberia in the 1839 Constitution, which was drafted by the American Colonization Society. The City of Edina was chartered as a City –the first in Liberia- in 1833.
Edina is located right at the confluence of three rivers and the Atlantic Ocean. The Benson River to the west joins the mighty St. John River from the northeast and the Mechlin River from the East. The city of Edina therefore boasts pristine beaches along the river and ocean front.
concept [proposal] is intended to kick start the process and to “Lift Edina” through to a future that is even brighter than its past. What is proposed here is for initial support to the City of Edina as part of a medium to long term development strategy.
